How about Your Wedding Dress, Buy or Tailor Mother's?

By Miracle Pan

A good rental company will keep everything pretty worry free for you, so you won't have to sweat the possibility of your dress getting ruined. Prices vary place to place, so you'll have to just check them out, but you will save hundreds compared to buying a new dress.

I don't know much about dresses, but it sounds like it could be just as expensive to tailor the dress to fit my fianc as it would to just buy a new dress that would be tailored to her as part of the costs.

Answer: It would be much cheaper to have her mother's gown altered. She should bring it to a few seamstresses for them to give her quotes. Tell her to ask her married friends who did their gown alterations and she can start with those recommended tailors. If they have to take in the bodice, waist and hem the gown it may cost a few hundred at most, but a new gown can cost thousands. They say that wedding gowns never get worn again, so this is a great way to make use of an existing gown and actually get us out of it again, in addition to the sentimental value of it. Also it's greener to re-use items rather than buying new, because new items have a large carbon footprint. Any new gown your fianc buys comes from China or overseas, and it takes a ton of energy to get anything shipped from there. Her mother's gown was probably made in the USA years ago so that's a much better choice.

It's been my experience that renting is expensive. Why don't you look at used gowns? There are many on the web. You have to be careful though. Some of the places say the gown has stains that will come out. Don't believe it. Some stains do come out. Most don't. What you wind up with is a stained bridal gown and who wants that. There is one place that says their gowns are clean and don't have any stains. They have a good selection of nice gowns and they are cheap.

I didn't wear my mom's wedding dress when I got married. Not only was it way to big, but I didn't care at all for the style. I designed and made my own dress to my personal taste, and wore her veil instead.
