Check Out An Illusion Magic Review of "Poor Man Cups And Balls"

By Charlotte Friedrich

"Poor Man's Cups & Balls" is a packet style card technique that recreates a performance of classic cups and balls with what are effectively playing cards. The card technique follows the plot of a classic cups and balls routine - full of large loads at the end. But what's the point?

Here's how the effect looks. You produce a packet of six cards: three having photos of cups and three with photos of single balls. You state that you will execute a poor man's version of the classic "cups and balls" effect.

Following a number of turnovers, counts and other steps, the three balls individually "penetrate" through the cups, one at a time (a ball card is placed over a cup card and the ball card is exposed underneath).

In the next step, all of three balls penetrate the cups all at once and land on a card (there are now three balls printed on one card). In the last step, three big loads - three different kinds of fruits - show up on the cards from underneath the cup cards.

If you want, the trick comes with an alternate ending that features images of bunnies. The cards are gimmicked therefore audience may not examine them. The trick immediately resets so it's prepared to be performed once again.

The kit comes with the cups and balls cards, extra cards for the alternative ending and written instructions. The cards are top quality.

The instructions, however, were just adequate, as the images can convey more info. For instance, when magicians are instructed to show over the cards, it is nice to know in which way. A simple arrow on the photos will have helped greatly.

Is It Worthwhile?

One could say that "Poor Man's Cups & Balls" enables you to perform a cups and balls style routine without the need for a table. However, the card routine requires a desk as you have to lay cards down.

Moreover, since you must pick up cards, it is best to carry out this one on a close-up pad and not a smooth table surface.

Given all the factors, I simply don't find "Poor Man's Cups & Balls" to be really worth the effort. Instead, I'll stick to my real cups and balls routine.
